Henry’s mother had married Clara’s father. Henry and Clara grew up together. Like brother and sister. Like Marcia and Greg Brady. ?
?
Then they fell in love.?
?
Their engagement was postponed when Henry joined the Union Army to fight in the Civil War.?
?
Henry and Clara were friends with the Lincolns. Mary Lincoln invited them to join her and the President for an evening out. They would see a show. At Ford’s Theatre.?
?
Abraham Lincoln was shot. ?
?
The assassin, John Wilkes Booth, tried to run. Henry chased him. Caught him. Fought him. Booth slashed Henry’s arm with a Bowie knife. And got away.?
?
Clara came to the aid of her bleeding fiance. White dress. Stained crimson. Despite significant loss of blood, Henry assisted the First Lady to the Peterson house to be with her dying husband. Clara went too. ?
?
When they arrived, Henry passed out. Clara held his head in her lap as he passed in and out of consciousness. Finally, the President’s surgeon examined Henry. More serious than they thought. A major artery was cut. Henry was in trouble.?
?
They sent Henry home with medical aid. Clara stayed to assist the First Lady. Clara later said: ?
?
Poor Mrs. Lincoln, all through that dreadful night would look at me with horror & scream, ‘oh! my husband’s blood, my dear husband’s blood’…It was Henry’s blood, not the president’s, but explanations were pointless.?
?
Eventually, Henry recovered. Mr. Lincoln was not so fortunate. He died April 15, 1865. ?
?
155 years ago today.?
